Food Highlight Reel

Just a short post about food.  We love good food!  Unfortunately, there is no photographic evidence of the many delicious meals we have had along the way because when they are brought to us we are too busy scarfing it down to pull out the camera.

Also, something surprising is that the few recommendations we have taken from Rick Steves' guidebook have all been VERY underwhelming in the taste bud department. I think the guy goes for ambiance more than the food. Which is fine, but I think someone should write a foodie travel guide book. Hmmm, maybe we should do it... career change!

And not so surprising is that when we ask for recommendations from our house-hosts, they are always excellent. Except for the one dismally dreadful failure, which I will get to later.

This post is mostly for us, so we can remember the pure deliciousness we have enjoyed. So here is the highlight reel so far:

Roetelle in Paris- casserole with potatoes and seafood. I have a picture of this one when we had it with fondue.

Seafood Risotto in Monterosso (Cinque Terre), Italy - it had the tortilla dough over the pan and they set it on fire. And the seafood was so fresh and delicious
Pasta con Pesto in Genoa, Italy - where pesto was born, and you could tell
Gnocchi Gorgonzola in Grabovac, Croatia - we ordered one, then cleaned the plate and ordered a second one
Chicken with Gorgonzola in Trogir, Croatia - I'm pretty sure I made the "nom nom nom" sound as I inhaled it
Prawn Salad in Hvar, Croatia -we actually ate this 6 out of the 7 days we were in Hvar. And that's only because one of those days was a Sunday...
Steak in truffle cream sauce in Split, Croatia - so smoky and tender and delicious

As evidenced above, Croatia turned out to have GREAT food!

Pastries are delicious in France, don't get me wrong; but they have been slightly better in Italy just because they fill the croissants with things like marmalade, cream and chocolate and France leaves them plain.
So pastries are better in Italy, pasta is better in Croatia... we are assuming seafood will be better in Greece, gyros will be better in Turkey, and turkey sandwiches (that's what they eat in Istanbul, right?) will be better in Thailand.

And now, the inspiration for this post... the #1 worst meal eaten on our trip!!

"Fish Platter For 2" by Oarsan Restaurant in Dubrovnik.
-Recommended to us by our landlady, who told us it is where she goes out to eat, and they have good, cheap seafood right next to the water.
He's smiling because we haven't eaten any of it yet
The description said something like "fish filet, calamari, and shellfish" but it turned out to be a tuna steak, two whole fish with their heads, tails, and eyeballs on, WHOLE squids, and some very sandy and fishy mussels. Mmmm

So our highly recommended "good, cheap seafood" ended up costing us $75 and we went home hungry.

But the view of the harbor and Dubrovnik from our table was just lovely. So, lose-win.

Can't wait to see what's for dinner!
